The Sanctuary

Solitude.

When you’re a full time event planner, wife and mother with a side hustle (or a college student working two jobs, or a father who also cares for his mother) there is little time for peace, solitude, and quiet reflection. In all honesty, not everyone needs or wants solitude, but I’m one of those lucky ones who do. The trouble begins when that doesn’t happen.

Have you ever tried to read a book only to be interrupted repeatedly by ubersocial family members? You know, where you end up reading the same sentence six times and by the time you finish the chapter four months have gone by and your actual comprehension of the material is non-existent? It gets deeper in my case as this constant interruption carries over to my meditation and yoga practices. If only I had a space to retreat to…

The Spouse has found his peace in running. I find pain and depression in running so I need other outlets. When I first started to practice yoga over ten years ago, one of the things I loved the most was the atmosphere of the yoga studio. It lent so much to the overall enjoyment of the practice that I never wanted to do yoga in a gym, only in a sacred space. So the idea was born to create this space in my home.

We have a small spare bedroom in the middle of the house that is basically collecting unwantables. Time to clear the clutter! There are a few things that will need to remain in the room such as the bed, the exercise bike, and the spare TV, but I think as long as I can create a space to bliss out around those times I’ll achieve my goal. With the unwantables gone, I’ll have room for all the lovables.

Today is the day I get started! I’m very excited.

Self care is vitally important. And not just watching your diet and your blood pressure. If you need time to unwind… UNWIND! Never apologize for needing time apart from people. Reenergize and everyone will be thankful for it.
